Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapists (OTs) are experts in assisting people to enhance their quality of life by maximising independence and personal productivity.

At IRS, OTs specialise in providing services to people who have experienced an Acquired Brain Injury or other neurological event. We work with you to develop a tailored plan to ensure you reach your maximum functional ability and are safely reintegrated into your community.

Our Occupational Therapists are also qualified driving assessors who are able to evaluate a person’s ability to drive safely.

As an integral part of our allied health team, an Occupational Therapy program may include:

  • Assessment and treatment to maximise independent living skills such as personal care and domestic skills
  • Community reintegration including public transport training and return to leisure based activities
  • Development and subsequent monitoring of an Attendant Care Program
  • Home modification assessments
  • Equipment prescription such as wheelchairs and scooters
  • Upper limb assessment and treatment
  • Cognitive function including memory, planning and organising
  • Holiday planning
  • Driving assessments (see more information below)

OT Driving Assessments

A request for a driving assessment may be made to maintain a valid driver’s licence and ensure all drivers are as safe as possible on our roads. VicRoads issuesa letter to anyone requiring a driving assessment. A referral may then be made to us by a family member,a doctor or anyone involved in care.

An Occupational Therapy driving assessment has two stages - an off-road assessment in our rooms in Glen Iris (up to 2 hours) and, on a different day, an on-road assessment in a dual-control vehicle with a driving instructor (up to 1 hour).

The Occupational Therapist assesses the client's ability to drive safely including physical ability, understanding of safe driving, judgement, reaction time and abiding with road laws. Their recommendations are sent to VicRoads who make the final decision regarding driving ability.

Clients may be found safe to resume driving, they may require modifications to their car or may be asked to take lessons to improve their driving skills. Some may be found not safe to continue driving.

IRS has 2 qualified Occupational Therapy driving assessors who are happy to discuss the process with you and your clients or for more information visit the VicRoads website www.vicroads.gov.au or download the VicRoads Driving Assessment Brochure here.

(Please note: driving assessments will only be conducted after receipt of a letter from VicRoads the client to under
