Transition from dependence to independence
Occupational Therapy has developed out of the need to
understand the relationship between what a person does (i.e. their occupations)
and their health and well-being.
Occupational Therapy addresses peoples’ occupational
needs and the loss of daily living skills that follow physical, emotional,
psychological and social disorders. Therapists assist individuals to
make the transition from dependence to independence, maximizing personal
productivity, well-being and quality of life.
The goal is to habituate or rehabilitate people who have difficulty
managing daily activities. Occupational therapy assists people to perform
their activities of daily living (ADL) and helps them to overcome barriers.
Therapy includes evaluation, intervention, consultation, supervision
and education.
